Update: Our Second Edition of 25 Gray Hair Bloggers Who Rock is here!

Every once in a while we read something that gets us worked up about women going gray.

Well, we are always worked up about women going gray and its role in shifting society’s definition of beauty, but certain stories and testimonies resonate more than others. Leah Rozen stirred up some excitement a few weeks ago with her awesome New York Times article She’s Done with Washing it Away. And Leanne Italie’s superb piece last year about going gray in the workplace made us all stop and think, That could be me one day. And we can’t forget Dana King, former TV anchor turned artist who undauntedly made the choice to gray in front of millions of viewers.

But it is the smaller voices that excite us the most about the “gray revolution.”

The voices that affect change on a smaller scale, but collectively, make a huge impact on how we define beauty.

This post celebrates the voices of 25 bloggers who are boldly taking on the subject of going gray. They’re intelligent, insightful, and wise. Funny, caring and kind. She's a 58-year-old empty nester who, at the age of 41, transitioned from a 20+ year career of working in the federal and private sectors to full-time entrepreneurship. Along with Revolution Gray, Terri owns an online marketing firm called Holley Creative. She has an awesome husband of 33 years, and a sweet, kind adult daughter who is a Physician Assistant student.

    Thank you so much for including me in this post. I feel so honoured to be included in such a list. I have loved my journey to grey and I am so happy that I blogged and videoed my way through it. I have now written a book "Daring To Be Grey" which will be ready for release within the next two weeks. I feel more confident that ever before. Love being confidently me through and through.

    You have inspired me to write about this in my blog. I am a redhead who is fading fast into grayhead, and that is ok with me. To a true redhead, there is no such thing as a good red hair dye color that looks like the real thing, so I'd prefer to just let it "die" naturally!     Thanks for these links, many were very inspiring. You may want to check them out more carefully however, some of these women are still coloring their hair and merely thinking of going grey (or thought about it long enough to write one post about it). One blogger is worried that if she "let's herself go" grey, she may stop shaving her legs or taking care of herself in other ways, a thought that was offensive to me as a person who values the beauty of grey/silver hair.

We wanted to represent a spectrum of thoughts around the subject, and really truly get at what is on the minds of women. We think these 25 posts did just that.       Hi Sami, I wrote "Fear Of Having Gray Hair" and I wanted to apologize if I offended you. My intention was the opposite! I feel so ridiculous for being afraid to go gray and I admire the beautiful women around me who have done it! I wanted to share my deepest, most embarrassing fears – even though they might be misinterpreted as my true feelings – so that I could bring them into the light, take a look at them and debunk them. I would guess that a lot of women are sorting through irrational fears about "having gray hair." Being vulnerable and authentic about my process is a way that I can connect with other women and hopefully make it easier for them to look at their own irrational fears.

    Fantastic round-up! Going about life with my funky grey 'do, I'm lucky to often forget that this natural state of being is as yet such a "thing" – and a gendered one – in our youth-and-apearance-fetishizing culture. So weird! Thanks for furthering the kinds of conversations toward freedom from negative associations, angst, and emotional load so we can come to have more space (and time and resources) available for joy.

    Wow, never knew there was a group of grey-haired bloggers. I ran across this post from "Already Pretty" and glad I did.. A friend told me I'd look better as a blond, but frankly I love my grey hair. I just started blogging (www.fashionabletgwoman.com) although I have been guest posting for 18 months now. can't wait to read what you all have to say

    Gone gray! Now I find my "colored hair" makeup has to go! Exciting experimenting with new color, that makes my gray hair stand out even more. I've colored my hair since I was 16 🙂 Going home for thanksgiving. I'm curious to see the reactions I'll get.

    I started going gray in middle school. Have been coloring my hair on and off since then (every 3 weeks). Finally ready to go natural for good as I approach my 60th birthday. So excited! Getting ready to buzz it! Can't wait to wear fabulous colors and nice lipstick.

    At the age of 36 I had to under go a year of chemotherapy and with 5 different drugs that all cause hair loss…it fell out after my first 5 days if treatment. A year later when my hair started to grow back in it had no pigment. To me it almost looked beige. After having a full head of natural brown hair I refused to allow myself at 37 to have grey hair. After being bald and beautiful for a year I was so looking forward to the thick curly hair everyone said I would get. Well I got it …it just had no color. At 1 inch of length I coloured it for the first time and after colouring it for 15 years I decided I wasn’t going to color it again. I wanted to see what color my hair actually is! First thing I did was cut it really short. It was more of a shock for people to see my hair so short sometimes they don’t even notice the color! I am so happy to be free of hair dye ruling my life. I have accepted what the good lord gave me and am proud to have a short chic silver head if hair.

    Well I did it! had my hair buzzed and it was exciting and scary at the same time. Was pleasantly shocked at the reactions from co-workers. Never had so many compliments and they keep coming. Have to give credit to my daughter for a fantastic cut and all her support. I love it more everyday. Free at last!

    I'm 45 years old and have been thinking about taking the plunge for about a year. I'm tired of the dyeing process, the time, expense, and mess! I want to be "ME," not someone who's hiding who she is! I have black hair, and I'm probably 70% gray. I'm not comfortable letting me hair grow out since I'm starting a new job in 6 days. I scheduled an appointment with my hair stylist, and I'm going to add low-lights to make going gray a more subtle transition. My daughter keeps telling me I'll regret it. My husband says, "Go ahead," but he has a look on his face that is quite the contrary. However, they are not me….and they don't know what I'm feeling inside. I'm ready….I've been working on this transition internally for the past year. Now I'm ready to express this transition externally!!!!! Wish me luck!!!!!

      I felt exactly the same I have been wanting to do so for a fees years. Same my daughter said no husband said yes. I finally did if. I cut it short no more colour. In feb this year. 3 more cuts later n am natural black n white I have embraced it love it, no regrets. My husband likes it my daughter no. I am who I am not a wanna be 20 something. I am 43. In the long run it is worth the freedom n the look is not as bad as you imagined. In ten years time I won't look any different while other lady's my age who colour I think will look odd because they have this coloured hair with an aged face n the colour actually ages them.

    Maureen – best of luck w/ your decision – I too am 45 years old born in 1968 and have never colored my hair and it has been coming in gray since my late 30s. My husband has always supported my decision not to color my hair as do my kids……my main concerns are environmental and the damage the dyes are doing to Mother Earth and also on a personal level, I am not sure what it can do to a woman's health…..certainly the hair dye companies won't share their inside knowledge on the health impact repeated dyes do to the body/cancer etc. And lastly, I want to make a statement to society that "this is what a 45 year old woman looks like." Let us know how it goes for you!

    Going gray update – I. Am. In!!!! I finally got over my fear and am letting those pesky little gray hairs into my world. It feels so much better to not worry about the time and money and energy it took to keep myself looking “naturally” brown. Thanks for all of these great posts and the encouragement of so many pretty gray-haired ladies!

    Thank you for this post. I am 67 years old and have had gray hair for over 10 years .I have been using shimmy light and was looking for more product to use. This post has been very helpful. I have never died my hair it is natural.
