Most of us glance in the mirror as we get ready for the day. We glance in the mirror on our way out the door, but seldom do we look at ourselves for a long time in a mirror. It probably wouldn’t be healthy to look for too long in a mirror if we are looking at the external, but what I am talking about is looking beyond the external.

I have found that every now and then it can be very therapeutic to stare at myself in the mirror, not at my looks but at the core of my being. There is a saying: The eyes are the windows of the soul. I feel there is some truth to this. I have found that staring at my eyes in the mirror every now and then can remind me of who I am, who I am becoming, and who I wish to become.

When we transition to gray, this experience can be even more profound. We are observing the external change while also knowing that something is changing within us.

With hindsight, I am able to see that one of the reasons we fear going gray is that this will be such an obvious visual change. As humans, we are often not keen on change. We can even fear change. Yet in reality, we are changing in every moment. We are constantly learning, evolving and growing, and all of these lead to change.

The transition from dyed to gray can for many be a change that is too much to cope with. There can be many reasons for this, ranging from views in society to our own core beliefs. We can get so caught up in those external glimpses in the mirror mixed with these views that we can lose the connection with the person we truly are.

So I am suggesting spending a bit more time with the mirror and looking beyond the external. What truly makes you feel beautiful? What makes you feel wonderful? What makes you shine so much from within that your silvers can’t help but shine externally for the world?

There is so much more to you than the color of your hair and your quick glimpses in the mirror could ever reveal.
