Going gray? As you may have noticed, your grays might have a different texture than your non-gray hair. They might feel coarser, dryer, or finer. As your hair grays, your oil glands produce less sebum.  This can make your hair feel drier and courser. Taking a little extra time to give your luscious silver locks some love is essential in caring for and maintaining your new hue.

The good news: A good conditioner can work wonders for graying hair.

You’ve probably been using hair conditioners your entire life, but do you know what they do for your hair? Today’s conditioners were developed when Édouard Pinaud created a product called Brilliante. This product was designed to soften hair and make it more manageable. Thank you, sir!

There are different kinds of hair conditioners you can use for gray hair:

  • Pack conditioners – typically heavy and thick with a high concentration of surfactants that bind the hair structure. These are typically your deep conditioners and masks that sit on your hair for a while.
  • Leave-in conditioners – these are thinner and have different surfactants, and are lighter and less viscous, thus leaving a thinner layer on the hair. Leave-in conditioners can also be used to detangle and moisturize.
  • Ordinary conditioners (a quick put in and rinse out)  – these have ingredients that combine pack and leave-in conditioners.

A healthy gray hair care regime may include working in different conditioners during the week.

Experimenting to see what works for you is key.

Hair conditioner ingredients might be something to assess. Some of our readers love using natural ingredients to nourish their hair.  Shea butter, aloe vera, coconut oil, argan oil jojoba oil, and honey are among favorites.

Here are a few conditioners that will keep your hair soft and manageable. Some of these are tried and true; some of them are newer to the playing field.  Let us know if you see a favorite and share your review in the comment section! (aff)
